Titolo: Criminalizing Dissent or Legitimizing Protest? Framing the 2024 Bangladesh Quota Reform Movement across Television Ecosystems

Abstract: This study examines how different television ecosystems framed Bangladesh's 2024 student quota reform protests through computational text analysis of broadcast transcripts. Using contextual embeddings and topic modeling on Bengali-language content, we construct a semantic axis measuring criminalization versus legitimization frames across three media blocs: pro-government television, anti-government/independent television, and dissident YouTube channels. Using a difference-in-differences design around the August 2024 protest period, we analyze how framing strategies diverged across these ecosystems during the uprising. Our approach combines BERTopic for data-driven keyword extraction with contextual embedding regression to measure frame scores at the episode level. Preliminary findings suggest systematic differences in how media blocs portrayed student protesters, with implications for understanding media polarization and protest legitimacy in authoritarian contexts. This work contributes to computational approaches to media framing analysis and provides empirical evidence of information warfare during political crises
