Titolo: Integrating innovation and sustainability in public governance: a multi-level analysis of Smart Cities for Public Value creation
Abstract: In the digital innovation era, the banking industry has undergone significant transformation, driven by technological advancements, regulatory shifts, and competitive pressures. Against this backdrop, the spread of FinTech has fostered banks to adopt an outward-looking approach, evolving from direct competition to cooperation forms with FinTech firms. In this competitive environment, FinTech M&As emerged as a critical strategy for incumbents to acquire capabilities, enhance competitiveness, and improve performance. This study comprehensively analyses Bank-FinTech M&A and their impact on bank performance. The study employs a global sample of listed banks, evaluating financial and non-financial performance metrics (i.e., profitability, operational efficiency, riskiness, and ESG indicators) post FinTech M&As. Furthermore, the study provides new implications by analysing the role played by business models on these performance metrics following M&A operations. The study’s empirical findings support strategic decision-making processes for banking practitioners while providing new policy implications for regulators and banking supervisory authorities.
