16th MEDIA ECONOMICS WORKSHOP

CALL FOR PAPERS

 

The Department of ‘Scienze dell’Economia’ of the University of Salento and the Tilburg Law and Economics Center (TILEC) are pleased to announce the 16th Media Economics Workshop.

 

The meeting will be held at the University of Salento in Lecce, on October 11-12, 2018. The workshop venue will be the historical ‘Monastero degli Olivetani’ in the center of town.

The meeting aims at promoting interaction among researchers interested in the economics of media markets and media policy. A list of potential topics/sessions includes, but is not limited to:

 

 Pricing strategies in media and digital markets
 Business models in two-sided media markets
 Big Data
 Privacy
 Platform competition and regulation
 Auctions and advertising 
 Network effects, standards and compatibility
 Open-source, piracy and licensing of media contents
 Consumer protection and competition policy in media markets
 Media Bias: measurement and determinants
 Cloud computing
 Fake news 
 Media market structure and political outcomes
 Media mergers and pluralism
 Scope for public ownership and public service broadcasting
 Financing of public service broadcasting
 Regulation of advertising and media content
 Exclusive contracts and content provision
 Bundling in new and traditional media markets
 Local content in digital markets
 Scope for public subsidies in old and new media

 

Each presenter will be assigned a discussant. Both theoretical and empirical papers are welcome.

Format

The workshop sessions are planned over two days. Presentations (30 minutes) will be followed by a discussant and public discussion (15 minutes). Presenters may be asked to discuss a paper. There will be plenty of time for informal discussion and social interaction.

The workshop social program includes a gala dinner on Thursday night and a trip to the city ofOtranto on Saturday morning.

 

Workshop fees

There is a 150 euro fee to attend the workshop (which includes the social dinner). The fee will be waived to speakers and discussants. The organizing institutions will also cover the accommodation expenses of speakers and discussants.

 

Important Dates

The deadline for submissions is July 22, 2018. Papers should be submitted in .pdf format tomedia.economics@unisalento.it. Long abstracts are accepted but full papers are preferred. Authors will be notified of paper acceptance by August 10, 2018. In case of questions, please contact thelocal organizers (see below).
